Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
On that part of BigJets' post, you have got a point. But I remember that in the last years of sabena's life, it was considered to delocate pilots to Luxembourg (to save on taxes and social contributions, I presume). I don't know if 25 years later, that would still be advantageous (and legal) Yes, i...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
High social contributions are indeed a problem. However, this is a systemic problem for all companies in Belgium and really not an exception compared to other countries. Even Southern States like Italy have similar levels of social contributions. I don't want to sanctify it, it's a systemic problem...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
I'm sure Lufthansa is aware of this also KLM is partly state owned Brussels Airlines is 100% a private company. KLM is 100% owned by Air France - KLM SA, in which both the French and the Dutch state have a stake (both around 14%). No its isn't, 49% actually. There are foundations that have non-divi...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
As to Brussels Airlines, I am sure they will be the first one in one category after COVID.. As the one going on strike and delving its own grave … Trade Unions kind of rule in the Kingdom by the North Sea. Yeah right, blame the workers again. LH staff never strike, AF/KL even less. Ignorance at its...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
My impression. They will wait as long as possible till the end of the month when there is no money anymore. Then what? To accept or to die? Both are not good My impression is that CS will wait for the deal between LH and Germany. If LH makes concessions towards Belgium in terms of shareholding or g...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
The situation at OS and in Austria is quite similar to SN/Belgium. https://www.derstandard.at/story/2000117417374/aua-rettungsflug-geraet-in-deutsch-oesterreichische-turbulenzen Short summary : OS is requesting a State aid of 767 m  If I were Austrian I’d have asked for 787 million, they need...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
Very interesting video about the current situation (conversation between 2 VRT journalists): https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2020/05/12/volg-live-luchtvaartexpert-riadh-bahri-over-de-besparingsingree/ According to Riadh Bahri (aviation specialist VRT) the Swiss government has made a bailout deal with ...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
1000 jobs will be gone soon, and most of the reactions are about the fleet & destinations that will be scrapped (or worse; the little personal idea of flying long haul in a twin aisle aircraft). Pathetic. This isn’t a union forum: that it’s more about the network and fleet is only logical. Does...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
The connecting traffic from North America (don't forget Canada) is indeed "that big." Brussels would not have had six daily flights to North America without African connections. It is not because of the demand to Belgium alone that United is planning to resume three daily flights as early...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
Thus, the question fr the future is not to catch the AF/KLM customer -> which won't be a bargain since the scalability of economics for a small player are more difficult than for a larger one, but finding the right nihe to have an economically feasable business model. Why not offer clients an alter...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
As for SN, if they follow my suggestion, get 3 billions from the Belgian government to rebuild a proper airline like Italy is doing with Alitalia, it will be most of all at the expense of AF and KLM, and they're gonna ${(*% their pants. KLM and AF have taken advantage of SN's weakness all this time...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
CS also referred to the expensive night stops. For me this means again that he sees SN's future as a LCC/P2P airline. We must all learn to read between the lines. Also the fact that apparently now it has been decided that LH/EW/LX will fly again much sooner than OS/SN. A confirmation of something w...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
Many people here say that Lufthansa has bought Brussels Airlines for almost nothing: 65M for 45% in in 2009, plus 2,6M for 55% in 2016. That’s not a lot of money indeed, compared to the turnover. But if one buys a company, one doesn’t only buy the good: one buys the good, the bad and the ugly. Fact...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
Are we so proud that we will continue to put money in a bottomless pit? FWIW, the 'bottomless pit' is actually quite lucrative for the Belgian government! You forget that all those employees pay income tax but use a lot of government resources as well (social benefits, healthcare, infrastructure et...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
I’ve seen this mentioned a lot but do you have a source that the African destinations were profitable, and thus the rest of the destinations unprofitable given that SN didn’t make a profit over its lifetime?

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
initially the question is not what's good for Belgium, but what's good for Brussels Airlines to survive this crisis and I think the African ops have proven to be paramount in the survival of Brussels Airlines. Are they paramount? African ops are not viable without connecting passengers, SN has 3 A3...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2020
Interesting to read the twitter of Riad Bahri, author of the VrtNws article: government wants minority of shares for the loan, LH refuses this. Government is also investigating the scenario of letting SN go bankrupt in order to start something new/smaller. Bernard Gustin's name would circulate in t...
