Thunderstorms with heavy precipitation of rain and hail and gusty winds expected in Western Europe

This afternoon a stormy weather system will pass over large parts of Western Europe, air traffic disruptions may occur in the following countries: The Netherlands, France, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium.

Thunderstorms with heavy precipitation of rain and hail and gusty winds (with wind shears) are forecasted for Amsterdam (CB’s and winds gusting up to 45 knots), Brussels Airport (winds up to 30 knots), Frankfurt Airport (winds gusting up to 50 knots), Munich Airport (evening, thunderstorms and rain, winds gusting up to 50 knots) and Stuttgart (winds up to 45 knots).

Thunderstorms and rain are also expected in Switzerland: Geneva Airport (thunderstorms and rain, winds gusting up to 35 knots) and Zurich Airport (thunderstorm with hail, winds gusting up to 45 knots).

Wind gust is a sudden, brief increase in speed of the wind. According to U.S. weather observing practice, gusts are reported when the peak wind speed reaches at least 16 knots and the variation in wind speed between the peaks and lulls is at least 9 knots. The duration of a gust is usually less than 20 seconds.
