The European Cockpit Association (ECA) has urged Lufthansa to restore cooperation with pilot representatives, warning that escalating tensions risk undermining trust and potentially affecting flight safety.
In a statement, the ECA—representing around 44,000 pilots across Europe—criticised moves that it says limit or suspend agreements allowing union-appointed pilot experts to participate in safety-related work.
According to the association, these experts have long contributed to aviation safety by engaging with institutions such as the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and other international bodies.
ECA Vice-President Paul Reuter warned that restricting pilot input could have long-term consequences for both labour relations and safety oversight. He stressed that while industrial disputes are not uncommon, safety-related activities should remain insulated from labour conflicts.
The intervention comes amid ongoing tensions between Lufthansa management and pilot unions over working conditions, pay and cost-cutting measures.
Bottom line: European pilot representatives are escalating pressure on Lufthansa, framing the dispute not only as a labour issue but as a potential risk to the integrity of aviation safety processes.
