A last-minute dream holiday to Curaçao turned into a nightmare for a Belgian couple after tour operator Corendon suddenly demanded an extra €710 – one day after the booking was confirmed. The incident was first reported by Belgian daily newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws.
Glenn Verdoodt (45) and Cathy Dereymacker (38) from Vilvoorde had booked a one-week holiday package to Curaçao through Corendon’s website for €871.50, including flights and accommodation. However, when Cathy called the company to correct a small error in her surname on the booking, the couple was told that the original price was “incorrectly displayed” online. Unless they paid an additional €710, their trip would be cancelled.
The news came as a major blow to the couple, who had already spent €612 on expedited international passports to travel outside Europe. “We paid everything correctly, received a confirmation, and then out of nowhere we got a new invoice with an added €710,” said Glenn. “We can’t afford that extra cost, so we were forced to cancel.”
Corendon defended the price hike, citing a “technical error” on their website that displayed unusually low fares. A spokesperson stated that customers were informed within 24 hours, in accordance with Corendon’s booking terms, which allow for retraction in case of obvious pricing mistakes.
The couple, now left with cancelled plans and costly, unused travel documents, say they feel “trapped and deceived.” Their case adds to growing complaints online about Corendon’s handling of customer refunds and booking errors.
Corendon has apologized for the inconvenience but maintains that its actions were in line with its terms and conditions.
