© Martin Gillet The Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) 2026, held from July, 20th-24th 2026 at Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre in the United Kingdom, once again reinforced its position as one of the world's leading aerospace, aviation, defence and space exhibitions. Bringing together industry leaders, government delegations, innovators, investors and policymakers from across the globe, FIA provides a unique platform where strategic partnerships are forged, breakthrough technologies are unveiled, and the future of the aerospace sector is shaped. © Martin Gillet © Martin Gillet It is also a major showcase for the industry's leading players, offering companies the opportunity not only to demonstrate their expertise, technological know-how and savoir-faire, but also to present full-scale mock-ups and concepts of their latest and future aircraft and systems, giving visitors a tangible glimpse into the next generation of aerospace innovation. © Martin Gillet The 2026 edition marked the largest and most international Farnborough Airshow to date. A total of 1,636 exhibitors participated—representing a 15% increase compared with 2024—with 22% attending for the first time. The event featured 28 international pavilions, up from 21 in the previous edition, while 63% of exhibitors were international, further cementing Farnborough's status as the most international airshow on the global calendar. To accommodate this growth, the exhibition expanded by 5,000 m² of new event space, including the introduction of Hall 0 and additional outdoor chalets. Notably, U.S. exhibitors occupied more than 20,500 m², representing approximately 35% of the total exhibition space across the site. Spanning more than 500,000 m², the show remains the world's largest temporary outdoor exhibition—an area equivalent to approximately 78 football pitches, the footprint of 1,350 Concorde aircraft, or 630 Airbus A380s. The event's construction was itself a remarkable undertaking, requiring 140 days of physical build activity, over 65,000 man-days, 4,000 contractors, 99 official suppliers, and more than 2 km of temporary structures installed across the site. FIA 2026 also reflected the growing global importance of the aerospace sector, with a 46% increase in countries invited to attend and more than 600 investors participating through the Aerospace Global Forum's Finance Summit. Across five days, the Airshow focused on the themes of Advancing Aerospace, Propelling Defence, and Pioneering Space, with discussions and announcements covering sustainable aviation, digitalisation, advanced air mobility, artificial intelligence, defence capability, supply chain resilience and next-generation space technologies. Against an increasingly dynamic geopolitical and economic backdrop, FIA 2026 once again demonstrated why it remains the premier global forum for innovation, collaboration and business in aerospace. What marked this 2026 edition was, of course, the emergence of drones of all types and for all uses. The large Proteus demonstrator from Leonardo, developed for the Royal Navy, capable of carrying a 3-ton payload, was a standout. The MV250 hybrid-electric UAV is derived from the Beta Alia 250 eVTOL and offers a range of 250 nautical miles with a 1-ton payload. Leonardo Proteus © Benoit Denet Ukraine was well represented with a whole series of drones, including the Liutyi strike drone, presented for the first time at an air show. © Martin Gillet Airbus exhibited various drones, including the "Bird of Prey." Much more than a simple combat drone, based on the Airbus Do-DT25 airframe, this target drone is evolving into a true drone hunter. Airbus Bird of Prey © Benoit Denet In a different vein, Airbus unveiled its 13-meter-long U760 Ravenstorm Unscrewed Collaborative Combat Aircraft (UCCA). Optimized for multi-domain missions, the UCCA is capable of conducting air-to-ground strikes using precision-guided munitions, providing air-to-air defense with long- and medium-range anti-aircraft missiles, and conducting electronic warfare operations to neutralize enemy air defenses and counter offensive air strikes with non-kinetic jamming. The Ravenstorm will be available in the early 2030s. Airbus Ravenstorm © Benoit Denet Even more surprising, also from Airbus, is the U145, an unmanned version of the H145 helicopter, being developed as a mission-independent solution for both civil and military applications. Its modular design allows for expansion into roles such as disaster management, firefighting, armed reconnaissance, surveillance, and drone mothership functionality for air-launched effects. Airbus U145 © Benoit Denet Boeing was also present, showcasing the MQ-2B “Ghost Bat,” a Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA). It is designed to work with manned systems and utilizes advanced autonomy and mission systems to extend the range, resilience, flexibility, and effectiveness of air combat operations. Boeing MQ-2 © Benoit Denet General Atomics (GA-ASI), building on its success with the MQ-9, presented its FQ-42A Collaborative Combat Aircraft system. The USAF signed a contract last month to begin production of this model. It should be noted that GA-ASI also signed a memorandum of understanding at this air show as part of an industrial cooperation initiative based in Belgium. Clearly, collaborative combat drones are a crucial topic for future conflicts and have generated significant interest from numerous air forces and delegations.
