Arianespace has successfully launched two Galileo navigation satellites using Europe’s Ariane 6 rocket, marking the launcher’s first mission for the EU’s flagship satellite navigation programme.
The mission, designated VA266, lifted off from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana on 17 December 2025 at 02:01 local time. Flying in the Ariane 62 configuration with two boosters, Ariane 6 placed Galileo satellites SAT 33 and SAT 34 into medium Earth orbit at an altitude of about 22,922 kilometres, with satellite separation occurring nearly four hours after liftoff.
This launch represents the 14th Galileo mission (Galileo L14) and reinforces the first-generation Galileo constellation, improving the system’s precision, availability and resilience. Galileo is owned by the European Union and provides highly accurate positioning, navigation and timing services to billions of users worldwide, alongside secure and high-accuracy services for professional and governmental users.
VA266 was the fifth flight of Ariane 6 and the 358th launch conducted by Arianespace. The mission also demonstrated Ariane 6’s flexibility, featuring a specially adapted upper stage with a shortened fairing, a lightweight launch vehicle adaptor used for the first time, and a Galileo-specific dispenser enabling lateral satellite mounting.
Arianespace and ArianeGroup highlighted the mission as further proof of Ariane 6’s reliability and rapid entry into service, underlining its role in guaranteeing Europe’s autonomous access to space and supporting critical EU space infrastructure.
