Three-weekly EuroNight service strengthens Switzerland’s international rail network with climate-friendly travel to Scandinavia

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), in cooperation with RDC Germany, will introduce a new EuroNight service linking Basel, Copenhagen, and Malmö starting 15 April 2026. Operating three times per week year-round, the train offers a comfortable overnight alternative to air travel and marks the first direct connection between Switzerland and Scandinavia.

The new service will be supported by the Swiss Federal Government under the CO? Act, promoting environmentally sustainable transport options. Ticket sales open on 4 November 2025 via sbb.ch, the SBB Mobile app, and SBB Travel Centres.

“With this new EuroNight connection, SBB is expanding its international services and making climate-friendly travel to Northern Europe even more accessible,” said SBB representatives. “The route from Basel to Copenhagen and Malmö meets the growing demand for sustainable, cross-border mobility.”

Schedule and Comfort Options

The EuroNight will depart Basel SBB at 17:35 on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, arriving in Malmö at 09:35 the following morning. Return services depart Malmö at 18:57 on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Mondays, reaching Basel SBB at 11:30.

The train accommodates around 350 passengers across sleeping, couchette, and seating cars, and includes an accessible compartment and a bistro car between Basel and Padborg. Key stops en route include Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Frankfurt Süd, Hamburg, Padborg, Kolding, Odense, Høje Taastrup, and Copenhagen Airport.

Although the train will not stop at Copenhagen Central Station due to scheduling constraints, passengers can reach the city centre in about 15 minutes by S-Bahn from Høje Taastrup or Copenhagen Airport.

Gateway to Scandinavia

From Malmö, travellers can continue onward to Stockholm, Gothenburg, and other Scandinavian destinations. Covering over 1,400 kilometres through Switzerland, Germany, and Denmark, the EuroNight connects Central Europe with the vibrant cultural and natural landscapes of Northern Europe.

Financial Support Ensures Viability

While night trains remain highly popular, they face high operating costs due to rolling stock, staffing, and access fees. To ensure the viability of such routes, the Swiss federal government has allocated approximately CHF 47 million through 2030 to support international night train services. Parliamentary approval of this funding remains pending. If not approved, SBB will notify customers and refund any purchased tickets.

The Basel–Copenhagen–Malmö EuroNight reinforces SBB’s commitment to expanding sustainable long-distance travel options and offers passengers a relaxing, scenic, and eco-friendly journey to Scandinavia.
