Next-generation night trains debut on Zurich–Hamburg route

A new era of European overnight rail travel begins on December 4, 2025, when SBB-CFF-FFS and ÖBB introduce their next-generation Nightjet trains on the Zurich–Hamburg route. The trains, designed to offer significantly improved comfort and privacy, will be rolled out on the Zurich–Vienna and Zurich–Amsterdam lines over the course of 2026.

To mark the launch, SBB and ÖBB officials joined Zurich City Councillor Andreas Hauri to christen the inaugural train “City of Zürich.” “This train will carry the name of our city across Europe as a symbol of openness, climate-friendly mobility and international connectivity,” Hauri said.

Upgraded Comfort: Mini Cabins, Fixed Beds, and Private Suites

The next-generation Nightjets introduce a range of passenger-focused upgrades. Sabine Stock, member of the ÖBB Passenger Transport management board, described the trains as “the most modern night trains currently operating in Europe.”

Key features include:

  • Fixed beds in both sleeper and couchette cars for improved rest.
  • Comfort Plus sleeping compartments with a private toilet, shower and dedicated seating area.
  • Mini Cabins for solo travellers, offering a compact private space with a fold-out breakfast table, mirror and reading light.
  • Inter-connected Mini Cabins for couples via a sliding door.
  • Modern access via NFC keycards, USB ports, inductive charging and a touchscreen control panel.
  • Improved accessibility, including lowered-floor compartments and adapted restrooms.
  • A multi-purpose compartment for bicycles and sports equipment.
  • Enhanced connectivity, with stronger mobile reception and onboard Wi-Fi.

The trains also include a new passenger information system and exterior video surveillance.

Growing Demand for Sustainable Overnight Travel

SBB says the upgraded Nightjets are central to its strategy to expand international passenger services and encourage eco-friendly travel alternatives.

“This is an important step in strengthening international connections and promoting sustainable cross-border mobility,” said Véronique Stephan of SBB’s executive board.

Tickets for the new Nightjet services are available through the SBB Mobile app, SBB.ch and SBB Travel Centres.
