A nationwide 24-hour public transport strike will bring most rail, metro, tram and bus services in the Netherlands to a standstill on Wednesday 9 September.
No regular NS trains will operate, although a special Airport Sprinter will run four times per hour between Amsterdam Central, Schiphol Airport and Hoofddorp. Passengers should nevertheless expect crowding and allow considerably more time to reach the airport.
International rail services will also be suspended, including Eurostar, EuroCity, EuroCity Direct, ICE and Nightjet trains. Regional cross-border services between Roosendaal and Antwerp and between Liège and Aachen will not operate either.
Amsterdam’s GVB network will stop at 04:00, including buses, trams, metros and ferries. Public transport in Rotterdam and The Hague will also be suspended, while services elsewhere will either be cancelled or depend on staff availability.
The regular timetable is expected to resume on Thursday 10 September. Travellers are advised to check journey planners shortly before departure and arrange alternative transport where necessary.
The FNV union called the strike to protest against government plans affecting social security and pensions.
