Eurostar, SBB and SNCF explore direct London–Switzerland rail link

Share

Eurostar, SBB-CFF-FFS and SNCF Voyageurs have signed a memorandum of understanding to study the launch of direct rail services between London and Switzerland. The agreement follows a broader cooperation deal signed by SBB and SNCF Voyageurs in March 2026 to strengthen their partnership and develop new international routes.

The companies believe there is strong demand for direct train services between the UK and Switzerland, particularly as London is currently the leading flight destination from Switzerland. Proposed journey times under study include around 5 hours between London and Basel, 5.5 hours to Geneva, and 6 hours to Zurich.

The project would build on the existing expertise of the three operators: SNCF Voyageurs and SBB already cooperate extensively, while Eurostar has more than 30 years of experience operating Channel Tunnel services.

The next phase involves analysing timetables and operational concepts. Several major hurdles remain before services could launch, including border-control arrangements, infrastructure upgrades, international agreements, train availability and securing rail paths through France and the Channel Tunnel.

The partners said they aim to introduce the service “as soon as possible”, but acknowledged that implementation is unlikely before the 2030s.

The initiative also follows a May 2025 memorandum between the Swiss and UK governments aimed at facilitating a future direct rail connection between the two countries.
