Amtrak will debut its NextGen Acela service on August 28, connecting Washington, D.C., New York City, and Boston with faster, higher-capacity trains. The first five of 28 new trainsets will begin operation this summer, with the full fleet in service by 2027.
The new Acela offers 27% more seats, expanded weekday and weekend schedules, and upgraded amenities, including free high-speed 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, personal power outlets, and reading lights. Tickets will be available via the Amtrak app, website, and station kiosks, with both current and NextGen Acelas operating during the transition.
Built by Alstom in Hornell, NY, using components from 180 suppliers across 29 states, the project has supported roughly 15,000 U.S. jobs. The NextGen Acela is part of Amtrak’s broader modernisation plan, which also includes new Airo trains, upgraded long-distance locomotives, and refreshed interiors across the network.
