The U.S. Air Force has deployed B-52 Stratofortress bombers from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, to Morón Air Base, Spain, for Bomber Task Force (BTF) Europe 26-1, a multinational training mission aimed at reinforcing NATO’s defensive posture across Europe.

Operating from Spain, the bombers will conduct flights across the continent to enhance coordination with Allied and partner air forces, including Finland, Lithuania, and Sweden. The deployment underscores U.S. and NATO commitment to deterrence and collective defence along the Eastern Flank and in the High North.

Missions in northern Europe are being integrated under NATO’s new Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) Bodø in Norway, inaugurated in October 2025. The facility improves command and control across the Nordic and Arctic regions, complementing the existing CAOCs in Uedem, Germany, and Torrejón, Spain.

Aircrews will train in advanced targeting and threat-response exercises, refining their ability to “find, fix, track, and target” in real-time against simulated ground and air threats. The scenarios are designed to test bomber and fighter crews’ performance in high-threat, contested environments, ensuring readiness to act decisively and maintain air superiority.

Spain’s CAOC Torrejón continues to oversee southern European airspace operations, working in tandem with CAOC Bodø to ensure seamless Allied airpower from the Mediterranean to the Arctic.

By deploying long-range bombers to Europe, the United States and NATO demonstrate their ability to project credible, integrated, multi-domain deterrence across the theatre—maintaining readiness, reassuring Allies, and preserving stability amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
