Four astronauts from NASA’s Crew-11 mission returned safely to Earth early Thursday after a medical issue affecting one crew member prompted an early departure from the International Space Station.
The crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego at around 03:40 ET (UTC-5) aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, concluding a roughly 10-hour return journey after departing the ISS on Wednesday evening. NASA confirmed the return was executed safely and professionally, emphasising that the affected astronaut has remained in stable condition throughout.
While NASA has not disclosed the identity of the crew member or details of the medical condition, officials said the issue was not related to an injury and arose in the challenging microgravity environment. The decision to return early was taken to allow access to comprehensive diagnostic resources available on Earth, following the earlier cancellation of a planned spacewalk.
All four astronauts — NASA’s Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman, JAXA astronaut Kimiya Yui, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Platonov — were assisted from the capsule as part of standard post-mission procedures and transported for routine medical evaluations, with hospital care included as a precaution.
NASA officials stressed that such scenarios are part of standard contingency planning and highlighted the risks of reentry, including extreme heat, high g-forces, and temporary communication blackout, all of which were successfully managed during the mission’s return.
