The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has highlighted aviation’s significant contribution to Rwanda’s economy, publishing its Value of Air Transport study in Kigali on 4 September 2025.
Based on 2023 data, aviation and related tourism supported USD 160 million in economic activity (1.1% of GDP), 42,000 jobs, and the transport of 16,500 tonnes of cargo. IATA praised Rwanda’s integration of aviation into its tourism strategy, investment in modern infrastructure, and adoption of global safety and passenger data standards.
IATA’s Regional VP for Africa and the Middle East, Kamil Alawadhi, noted Rwanda’s strong leadership in aviation and called for continued efforts in three areas:
Alawadhi emphasised that Rwanda’s policies have made it “exceptionally accessible” and positioned it as a continental leader in connectivity and sustainability, with aviation set to play an even greater role in its future growth.
