The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported robust growth in global air cargo markets for February 2026, with demand rising 11.2% year-on-year, outpacing capacity growth of 8.5%.
The increase was partly driven by seasonal factors such as pre-Lunar New Year shipping, but underlying indicators also point to solid momentum. Global goods trade rose 5.2% in January, while manufacturing activity remained in expansion territory, supporting continued cargo demand.
Regionally, growth was strongest in Africa (+21.0%) and the Middle East (+16.5%), followed by Asia-Pacific (+13.6%). Europe (+6.9%) and North America (+9.4%) also recorded gains, while Latin America saw only marginal growth (+0.7%).
Key trade lanes showed sustained expansion, particularly Africa–Asia (+61.9%) and Europe–Asia (+13.1%), with the latter marking 36 consecutive months of growth. Transpacific and intra-Asian routes also remained strong.
However, Willie Walsh warned that emerging geopolitical risks—especially conflict in the Middle East—could disrupt the outlook. Rising fuel costs, supply constraints, and pressure on major Gulf cargo hubs may impact performance in the coming months.
Despite these uncertainties, the sector continues to demonstrate resilience, supported by strong trade flows and increasing global demand for air freight.
