The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has appointed Saadia Zahidi as its next Director General, effective 1 November 2026, making her the first woman to lead the global airline industry body.
Zahidi joins IATA from the World Economic Forum (WEF), where she has served as Managing Director and member of the Managing Board for more than two decades. She succeeds Willie Walsh, who will step down on 31 July 2026 after leading the organisation through the COVID-19 recovery. Sandrine Le Borgne, IATA’s Chief Financial Officer, will serve as Interim Director General until Zahidi takes office.
IATA said Zahidi’s extensive experience in global economics, technology, labour markets and international cooperation will help the association navigate an aviation industry facing rapid technological change, geopolitical uncertainty and the transition to more sustainable operations.
In accepting the role, Zahidi said her priorities would include working closely with airlines, governments and industry partners to strengthen global connectivity, promote innovation, improve resilience and support the sustainable growth of aviation.
