Airlines for Europe (A4E) has criticised the European Commission’s proposed reform of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), arguing that it will increase costs for passengers without ensuring that ETS revenues are reinvested in aviation decarbonisation.
A4E said the EU had chosen to extend a regional emissions pricing system to address what it considers a global challenge, while failing to guarantee that the money collected from airlines and passengers will be used to reduce aviation emissions.
Managing Director Ourania Georgoutsakou called on the EU to prioritise lowering the cost of both ETS compliance and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), arguing that all ETS revenues generated from aviation should be reinvested in measures that support the sector’s decarbonisation and competitiveness.
The association said its member airlines remain committed to achieving net-zero emissions but stressed that future policies must help reduce transition costs while preserving affordable air travel and connectivity across Europe.
