Europe could face a jet fuel shortage within weeks if disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz persist, according to Airports Council International Europe (ACI EUROPE), which has urged immediate EU intervention.
In a letter to the European Commission, ACI warned that a supply crunch during the peak summer season would severely impact the economy, where aviation supports €851 billion in GDP and 14 million jobs. Jet fuel prices have already surged to $150–$200 per barrel, significantly increasing airline operating costs.
The group highlighted a lack of EU-wide monitoring of fuel availability and called for urgent measures, including mapping supply and demand, securing alternative imports, protecting intra-EU fuel flows, and assessing reserves.
ACI also proposed temporary regulatory flexibility—such as easing import restrictions under upcoming methane rules—alongside coordinated fuel purchasing and potential state aid support for the aviation sector.
