Leading European aviation bodies, joined by fuel suppliers and cargo operators, have issued an urgent call for stronger policy support to scale up sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), which they say are critical to achieving net-zero aviation by 2050.
Despite SAF’s potential, the market remains limited, with only HEFA-based fuels commercially available, and next-gen options like e-SAF and advanced biofuels struggling to attract investment and reach Final Investment Decision (FID) stages.
A 10-point action plan was presented to EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, during a policy dialogue. The plan calls for regulatory certainty, investment de-risking, cost-gap bridging, price transparency, and market monitoring.
Without urgent support, uneven SAF access could distort competition and hinder air connectivity across Europe.
The call comes ahead of the European Commission’s Sustainable Transport Investment Plan, expected in Q3 2025, which stakeholders hope will provide concrete support for SAF production and infrastructure.
