On June 1, 2025, Ukraine reportedly launched a significant drone strike targeting two major Russian airbases, Olenya in Murmansk Oblast and Belaya in Irkutsk Oblast. According to Ukrainian sources, the operation resulted in the destruction of over 40 Russian military aircraft, including strategic bombers such as the Tu-95, Tu-22M3, and at least one A-50 airborne early warning aircraft.
The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) is said to have orchestrated the attack, utilizing a swarm of drones to penetrate deep into Russian territory. Unverified footage circulating online shows (see at the bottom of the article) multiple aircraft engulfed in flames and large plumes of smoke rising from the targeted airfields.
In a notable development, reports suggest that the drones were launched from within Russia itself, possibly from trucks. One such vehicle was reportedly seized, and its driver detained, though it’s unclear whether he was aware of the cargo.
This operation, dubbed “Web,” marks one of the most extensive Ukrainian drone attacks since the onset of the conflict, demonstrating Ukraine’s capability to conduct long-range strikes deep into Russian territory.
Russian officials have acknowledged drone attacks in the regions of Murmansk and Irkutsk but have not provided detailed assessments of the damage.
