Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) carried out a drone strike on Russia’s Saky airbase in annexed Crimea overnight, damaging or destroying five fighter jets and an aviation weapons depot. The SU-30SM and Su-24 aircraft targeted are used by Russia in regular attacks on Ukraine.
The SBU confirmed the destruction of one Su-30SM, damage to another, and hits on three Su-24 bombers. The operation, led by the SBU’s Special Operations Centre “A”, is part of Kyiv’s broader strategy to degrade Russian military capabilities in the Black Sea region.
Saky airbase is a key Russian military hub for air patrols, surveillance, and long-range strike support. Ukraine has recently intensified its attacks on airfields and warplanes, following previous successful drone operations, including Operation Spiderweb on June 1, which reportedly damaged 41 Russian aircraft at four airbases.
These latest attacks continue to undermine Russia’s Black Sea operations, where Ukrainian drones have already destroyed several warships, forcing Moscow to reposition its fleet away from Crimea.
