Polish fighter jets have intercepted and shot down multiple Russian drones that entered Poland’s airspace overnight on their way to Ukraine. According to the Polish military, the incident constituted an “act of aggression” that posed a real threat to civilians.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed “multiple airspace violations” and urgently convened his government for a crisis meeting this morning. He has also been in contact with NATO leadership, including Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Poland temporarily shut down air traffic at four airports, including Warsaw Chopin, Modlin, Lublin, and Rzeszów, during the military operation. Chopin Airport has since reopened, though delays and disruptions are expected throughout the day.
Authorities have confirmed at least two crash sites where drone wreckage was found, in the village of Czosnówka and near a cemetery in Czesniki. Military and police units continue to search for other debris and have urged residents to stay away from any remains.
This marks the first time since the start of the war in Ukraine that Poland has actively shot down Russian drones over its territory. Correspondents note that while earlier violations involved drones straying off course, the scale and nature of last night’s incursion suggest Russia may be testing NATO’s response.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the incident proves President Vladimir Putin “feels increasingly untouchable” and warned that “Russian rockets and drones will continue flying deeper into Europe” unless stronger measures are taken. Kyiv is once again urging its allies to provide more weapons, impose tougher sanctions on Russia, and allow cross-border air defense systems to intercept attacks before they reach Ukrainian cities.
Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken also reacted, calling the violations of NATO airspace “unacceptable” and pledging solidarity with Poland. He emphasized the need to boost counter-drone capabilities, announcing that Belgium will soon proceed with a major acquisition.
Meanwhile, tensions on Poland’s eastern border continue to grow. Warsaw has announced the closure of border crossings with Belarus in response to large-scale joint military exercises that Belarus and Russia plan to conduct near NATO territory.
The Kremlin has not yet commented on the overnight incident.
