A Swedish pilot and a Norwegian passenger escaped injury after their Swedish-registered Flight Design CT2K floatplane, SE-VIH, overturned during take-off off the Danish island of Læsø on Friday evening.
According to North Jutland Emergency Services, a strong crosswind flipped the aircraft upside down approximately 100 metres from the coast near Storedal Beach. Both men left the aircraft and swam ashore without assistance, prompting the cancellation of a rescue operation that had already been launched.
The two occupants were cold after reaching land and were attended to by ambulance personnel, but neither required medical treatment or further examination. Emergency officials said they were in good spirits and were subsequently taken to a hotel.
The aircraft, which carries a Swedish registration, later drifted closer to the beach. Firefighters secured it around 20 metres from the shoreline to prevent it from drifting back out to sea.
Emergency crews did not turn over or recover the aircraft because it must remain undisturbed pending examination by the Danish Accident Investigation Board.
