On 16 August 2025, two men, a Swiss and a German national in their seventies, died in a double crash involving a tow plane and a glider shortly after takeoff from Barcelonnette airfield in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

The accident occurred in Saint-Pons, in the Ubaye valley, when the tow plane crashed at the end of the runway and the glider fell shortly after, about 100 metres away. A brief vegetation fire followed but was quickly contained.

The exact cause remains unknown, and an investigation has been launched by specialised gendarmerie units.
