Two people died and a fifth occupant remains missing after a REACH Air Medical Services LLC medical transport helicopter carrying five people crashed into the sea off California’s Catalina Island on Wednesday evening. Two survivors were taken to hospital and were reported to be in stable condition on Thursday morning.
The Eurocopter EC 135P2+ helicopter (reg. N313RX) went down several hundred yards offshore shortly after takeoff, according to US Coast Guard Captain Stacey Crecy. He said he believed it was transporting a patient from the island for further medical treatment.
Coast Guard and Los Angeles County rescue teams responded to the crash. Authorities said on Thursday that efforts to locate the missing occupant remained an active search-and-rescue mission.
The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation. The cause of the crash has not been established.
