A 14-year-old Belgian girl named Emmy and her pilot miraculously survived a plane crash off Réunion Island on Sunday, May 4, 2025. Shortly after takeoff from the Cambaie microlight base, the aircraft suffered engine failure and plunged into the sea. The pilot managed to release Emmy’s seatbelt, allowing both to escape the sinking aircraft and swim to shore, shaken but unharmed.
Emmy recounted the terrifying experience, describing water flooding the plane and her fear as they swam to safety. Her mother witnessed the crash from another microlight in the air, while her father and brother watched helplessly from the ground.
Authorities retrieved the aircraft, and the Air Transport Gendarmerie Brigade has opened an investigation into the cause, suspected to be engine power loss.
