A Satena-operated Beechcraft 1900D (registration HK-4709) carrying 15 people—13 passengers and two crew members—has been missing since midday Wednesday after losing all contact with air traffic control while en route to Ocaña, in Colombia’s Norte de Santander department. The aircraft was due to land at Aguas Claras Airport at 12:10, but failed to arrive.
Radar data last placed the plane between Hacarí and La Playa de Belén, in the Catatumbo region, a remote and difficult-to-access area. Authorities immediately activated emergency and search-and-rescue protocols, and a crisis coordination centre was set up in Ocaña involving local government and airport officials.
As a precaution, Satena cancelled subsequent flights scheduled for Cúcuta and Tibú. The aircraft had departed Medellín earlier in the day and was operating a regional circuit. The Minister of Transportation confirmed the number of people on board. No official information has yet been released regarding the cause of the communication loss or the condition of the occupants.
UPDATE
The wreckage has now been located in a mountainous area. All people on board perished. The official passenger list includes lawmaker Diógenes Quintero Amaya and Carlos Salcedo, a candidate in upcoming congressional elections.
