A major tragedy struck Lisbon on Wednesday evening when the historic Gloria funicular derailed in the city centre, killing 16 people and injuring 18, according to CNN Portugal. The carriage lost control on a steep slope near Avenida da Liberdade and crashed into a building. Most of the victims are believed to be tourists.
Emergency services, including 34 firefighters and eight trucks, responded swiftly, while President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life. Witnesses described scenes of panic as passengers tried to escape through windows before the vehicle overturned.
The 1885-built funicular, a popular tourist attraction linking Restauradores with Bairro Alto, has derailed before—in 2018—though without casualties. Authorities are investigating a possible cable failure.
