Five people were killed and two others injured when a Kamov Ka-226 helicopter registered RA-19307 crashed near the Caspian Sea coast in Russia’s Dagestan republic, officials said Friday.
According to the Emergency Situations Ministry, the privately operated helicopter was flying between two towns in Dagestan when it struck an unoccupied house, which was destroyed in the ensuing fire. Emergency crews later extinguished the blaze.
State news agency TASS reported that the helicopter belonged to the Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant and was not carrying tourists, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case for alleged violations of aviation safety regulations. Investigators are examining technical failure as a possible cause, though other factors are also under review.
