A U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base on 15 June 2026, killing all eight people on board in the deadliest B-52 accident in more than four decades. The aircraft was conducting a routine test mission in support of a radar modernisation programme when it went down at approximately 11:20 local time.
Air Force officials described the crash as “not survivable.” The victims included a mix of military personnel, government civilians and contractors; Boeing confirmed that two of its employees were among those killed. Emergency crews responded immediately, but the incident quickly became a recovery operation.
The crash occurred within the airfield perimeter, leaving a large burned area near the runway. Operations at the base were temporarily suspended while investigators secured the site and began examining the cause of the accident. Air Force officials have indicated that a full investigation could take several months.
The aircraft was assigned to the test community at Edwards, one of the United States’ principal flight-test centres. The B-52 involved was participating in ongoing efforts to upgrade the bomber’s radar and other systems as part of a broader programme intended to keep the fleet operational into the 2050s.
The accident is the first B-52 crash since 2016 and the deadliest involving the type since a 1982 training accident that claimed nine lives. The U.S. Air Force currently operates 76 B-52H bombers, which remain a key component of America’s conventional and nuclear deterrent forces.
