An Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter crashed near Flagstaff on Wednesday night while responding to an active shooter incident, killing both the pilot and a trooper who was also a paramedic, authorities confirmed.
The Bell 407 helicopter registered N56AZ was assisting the Flagstaff Police Department and other agencies when it went down at around 22:15, according to DPS and the Federal Aviation Administration. A post-crash fire was reported, and the aircraft was destroyed. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
The FAA said it will support the National Transportation Safety Board in investigating the cause of the crash. The helicopter, manufactured in 2004, was part of the DPS Air Rescue Unit, which supports high-risk law enforcement and rescue operations.
The shooting suspect involved in the original incident was taken into custody with non-fatal gunshot wounds, and no other injuries were reported.
