British counter-terrorism police arrested a 25-year-old man with dual British-Iranian nationality in Westminster, London, on 1 October as part of their investigation into suspicious activity near RAF Fairford.
The man was detained on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. Officers also searched two properties in Westminster. Five men arrested near the Gloucestershire air base on 27 September remain on police bail.
Investigators are examining possible foreign state involvement, but police have not announced a conclusion. Petrol was found in the vehicles involved in Sunday’s incident, although detectives confirmed that no improvised explosive device was present. Iran has denied involvement. RAF Fairford has been used by US bombers for operations against Iran.
Police subsequently corrected their initial statement: the newly arrested man is 25, rather than 27, and an earlier claim that a second man had been questioned under caution was withdrawn.
