A Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar and intended for use by Donald Trump as a temporary Air Force One has completed test flights and is expected to enter service this summer, according to the United States Air Force.
The aircraft—formerly owned by the Qatari royal family—is undergoing final modifications and repainting in a U.S. presidential livery. It is intended as an interim solution until new presidential aircraft are delivered around 2028 to replace the ageing current fleet.
Valued at approximately $400 million, the gift has sparked significant political controversy. Critics, including Democratic leaders such as Chuck Schumer, have raised concerns over legality and national security, citing constitutional restrictions on accepting gifts from foreign states.
Trump has defended the decision, describing the plane as a “beautiful gesture” and arguing it would be impractical to refuse. The aircraft is expected to begin operations later this year, marking an unusual and highly debated development in U.S. presidential aviation.
