A Ukrainian Air Force MiG-29 fighter jet crashed during a combat mission in Poltava Oblast overnight on June 27 after contact with the aircraft was lost, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
The pilot successfully ejected and was quickly located by search-and-rescue teams before being transported to a medical facility for evaluation and treatment. His condition was not immediately disclosed.
The Air Force said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident, but did not provide further details about the mission or the circumstances surrounding the loss of communication with the aircraft.
The incident follows another recent military aviation loss in Ukraine. On June 16, a Ukrainian Su-24 front-line bomber crashed in Khmelnytskyi Oblast while conducting a combat mission.
Despite the gradual introduction of Western-supplied fighter aircraft, Ukraine continues to rely heavily on upgraded Soviet-era platforms such as the MiG-29 for air defence and strike operations during the ongoing war with Russia.
