On 6 June, a Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 465, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, experienced an in-flight fire during a routine training mission.
The aircraft landed safely at the Imperial County Airport in Imperial, California. The Imperial County Fire Department swiftly extinguished the rapidly spreading fire after the aircraft landed.
“Our crews received a call to respond at 13:06 hours of an aircraft on fire. Crews performed a quick knock down of the aircraft and are currently in mop up operations. No injuries are reported and the fire is currently under investigation“, a spokesman of the Imperial County Fire Department wrote on Facebook.
The incident has been turned over to military officials.
