Sweden will contribute Gripen fighter jets to a NATO operation over Poland from October 2026, supporting the Alliance’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence and protecting a logistics hub used to channel military and civilian assistance to Ukraine.
The aircraft will mainly operate from bases in Sweden, flying missions in Polish airspace, with a smaller forward operating base in Poland. The government did not disclose the number of aircraft involved or the deployment’s duration.
Defence Minister Pål Jonson said the contribution would help defend Allied airspace and protect supply routes to Ukraine amid a serious security situation and repeated violations of NATO airspace.
This will be Sweden’s second fighter deployment to protect the logistics hub in south-eastern Poland, following its participation in NATO’s enhanced airspace surveillance mission there in 2025.
