Ghana is in mourning after a military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region claimed the lives of eight people, including two government ministers, senior security officials, and three Air Force crew members from the Takoradi Air Force Base.

The Ghana Air Force Harbin Z9 helicopter (registration unknown) went missing shortly after departing Accra International Airport at 09:12 GMT en route to Obuasi. Contact was lost with the aircraft over the Adansi Akrofuom District, triggering a search-and-rescue operation. Authorities later confirmed the helicopter had crashed and was destroyed by fire, and that there were no survivors.

Confirmed Victims:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
  • Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment and MP for Tamale Central
  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress
  • Samuel Aboagye, Former Parliamentary Candidate
  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, pilot
  • Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, co-pilot
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, flight technician

All three crew members were based at the Takoradi Airforce Base in the Western Region, which has been particularly hard hit by the tragedy. Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson confirmed their connection during condolence visits to grieving families.

“This is a national tragedy,” said Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, who announced that flags will fly at half-mast across the country until further notice.

Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, Commodore Samuel Ayelazono, described the incident as one of the most painful losses in recent memory, noting the deep emotional toll on the military community.

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash. The helicopter was transporting the officials for government duties in Obuasi.
