German Eurofighters deploy to Poland, boosting NATO air and missile defence

Share

The German Air Force has deployed five Eurofighter jets and around 150 personnel to Malbork, Poland, strengthening NATO’s Air Policing mission along the Alliance’s eastern flank.

The contingent — drawn from Tactical Air Wing 31 “Boelcke” and supported by additional Luftwaffe units — will provide 24/7 Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) coverage, ready to intercept unidentified or uncooperative aircraft approaching NATO airspace.

“This deployment underscores Germany’s unwavering commitment to the shared security of the Euro-Atlantic area,” said the detachment commander, callsign Colonel. “We look forward to working closely with our Polish counterparts over the next four months.”

Part of NATO’s Enhanced Eastern Posture

The mission forms part of NATO’s reinforced Air Policing presence introduced after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. By basing modern combat aircraft in Poland, the Alliance demonstrates both readiness and deterrence capability at a time of elevated regional tension.

During their rotation, the German Eurofighters will operate under the direction of NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre in Uedem, Germany. The deployment includes regular training sorties and integration drills with the Polish Air Force and other NATO Allies to maintain high operational readiness.

Second Simultaneous Mission for the Luftwaffe

The Polish deployment is the Luftwaffe’s second concurrent Air Policing commitment. Since April 2025, another German Eurofighter detachment has been leading NATO’s enhanced Air Policing mission from Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base in Romania.

Air Policing is a standing NATO peacetime mission, further reinforced by the Eastern Sentry enhanced vigilance activity, which provides a flexible and scalable posture across the eastern flank.

Germany’s latest deployment reaffirms its role in collective defence and highlights the importance of interoperability and integration in safeguarding Euro-Atlantic airspace.
