A suspected airspace violation involving drones has prompted a security response in southeastern Finland, with authorities confirming that at least one unmanned aircraft was identified as a Ukrainian model.
According to the Finnish Air Force, several slow-moving objects entered airspace near the Gulf of Finland on Sunday morning. Fighter jets, including F/A-18 Hornet, were deployed to monitor and identify the targets.
One drone was visually confirmed as a Ukrainian AN-196, while others were initially mistaken for possible threats but later identified in some cases as flocks of birds. At least two drones are believed to have crashed near Kouvola, where police secured impact sites and launched investigations.
Authorities, including the Finnish Border Guard, are examining the incident as a potential territorial violation. No injuries have been reported, but a temporary drone flight ban has been imposed in the area.
Senior officials, including Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen and Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, said the situation is being taken seriously, with ongoing investigations and heightened surveillance. Authorities noted that any future response to similar incursions, including possible interception, will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
