A military transport aircraft operated by the Colombian Armed Forces has crashed near Puerto Leguízamo, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
The aircraft, identified as a Lockheed C-130 Hercules with tail number FAC-1016, went down shortly after takeoff, approximately 3 kilometres from the town centre. It was carrying around 110 military personnel at the time of the incident.
Initial reports indicate that at least 20 individuals have been rescued alive, while the total number of casualties and the cause of the crash remain unconfirmed.
Authorities, including the Colombian Navy, are coordinating rescue and response operations at the scene. Defence Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that military units are actively working on-site but that further details are still being verified.
The incident highlights the scale of the emergency, with ongoing efforts focused on search, rescue, and determining the circumstances behind the crash.
Rescue teams in southern Colombia are continuing the search for four people still missing after the crash of a military transport aircraft.
At least 66 members of the Colombian security forces were killed when a Lockheed C-130 Hercules went down shortly after take-off near the border with Peru on Monday. The aircraft had been carrying 128 people on a flight from Puerto Leguízamo to Puerto Asís.
Local residents were first to reach the crash site, rescuing dozens of injured survivors from the burning wreckage and transporting them to nearby hospitals, often using motorbikes.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
