Belgian Defence plans to purchase five Cessna SkyCourier aircraft to support special forces operations, according to the latest Defence policy document. The aircraft will be delivered in commercial configuration and later converted into military platforms in Belgium.
The twin-engine SkyCourier, manufactured by Textron Aviation’s Cessna division, can carry up to 19 passengers and features a dedicated cargo compartment. While the aircraft is widely used in the civilian market — including by FedEx for cargo operations — Belgian companies Sonaca and Sabena Aerospace will modify the aircraft for military use. The conversion will include installing additional mission equipment, such as surveillance sensors and cameras.
According to defence analyst Jens Franssen (VRT NWS), the acquisition addresses operational limitations following the retirement of the C-130 Hercules fleet. The larger Airbus A400M requires longer runways, while the SkyCourier can operate from short and unprepared airstrips, including grass fields.
This capability will allow Belgian special forces to conduct rapid deployment missions, medical evacuations, and emergency evacuations of civilians or diplomatic personnel from remote locations.
The SkyCourier has a maximum speed of 210 knots (around 390 km/h) and a range of approximately 1,700 kilometres. The estimated unit price is reported to be around €6.5 million per aircraft.
However, the procurement process remains subject to legal review. A Canadian aircraft manufacturer has challenged the tender, alleging procedural irregularities. Belgium’s Council of State is expected to rule on an urgent suspension request next week, which could potentially delay or cancel the acquisition.
