The Belgian Air Force has put its fleet of Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport aircraft on sale: the nine remaining aircraft (from an initial fleet of twelve) will be replaced from 2020 by the modern Airbus A400M.
Belgium started using its first C-130 in 1972. The aircraft have been modernised several times since commissioning, including new wings and cockpit instruments.
The C-130, a workhorse of the Belgian Air Force, currently still operates cargo flights all over the world. Last week, a C-130 came back from a long-term UN mission in Mali.
The A400M, of which Belgium has ordered seven (together with Luxembourg which has ordered one), will take over the tasks of the C-130 between 2020 and 2022. The A400M can carry more cargo, has a larger flight range and is faster and more economical than its predecessor. Belgium has already ordered a flight simulator for the A400M.
