The Belgian army keeps day and night a combat helicopter ready to intervene in an attack by a drone. Security services expressed concerns that terrorists in the future will use a drone to carry out an attack, says television channel VTM.
Normally it is up to F-16 warplanes to monitor Belgian airspace, but they are flying too fast to intercept a drone. Therefore, an Agusta A-109 helicopter is on standby 24 hours a day at the air base of Beauvechain, Walloon Brabant. The helicopter is equipped with two 7.62 mm calibre machine-guns and is ready to take off within fifteen minutes. In addition, the helicopter can speed from 0 to 200 kilometres per hour, making it ideally equipped to intercept low-flying slow objects.
