Belgian A400M lands on public road in Sweden during military exercise

Share

A Belgian-Luxembourg Airbus A400M Atlas has demonstrated its ability to operate from an unconventional landing site by landing on a public road in Sweden. The impressive manoeuvre was carried out as part of a military exercise and shows how the A400M can be used from improvised landing areas away from conventional air bases.

Footage (*) shared by Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken shows the large military transport aircraft approaching the road before making a controlled landing. The road had been prepared and secured for the operation.

Operating from public roads or other improvised surfaces is part of the tactical flexibility of modern military transport aircraft. It allows air forces to continue operating if conventional air bases are damaged, unavailable or considered too vulnerable.

The A400M is specifically designed for tactical airlift operations and can operate from relatively short and austere landing strips. The aircraft can transport troops, vehicles and equipment and is capable of operating in environments where larger strategic transport aircraft may have more limited access.

The Belgian A400M fleet is operated by the 15th Wing Air Transport from Melsbroek. Belgium’s A400Ms are also operated jointly with Luxembourg, which participates in the multinational fleet.

(*) date and location of the landing site are unknown to the editors of Aviation24.be
