The Dutch Transport Museum in Nieuw-Vennep has received a Fouga Magister jet fighter. This trainer jet was used at the end of the last century for the training of pilots of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. During the Christmas holidays, visiting children in the National Transport Museum can enter the cockpit of this fighter jet to see what it feels like to be a fighter jet pilot.
The Fouga Magister is owned by the Belgian Air Force, where the aircraft was used as a training aircraft from 1961 onwards. In the sixties and seventies, the new fighter jet pilots of both the Belgian and the Dutch air forces were trained with these Fouga Magister fighter jets. The last Fouga Magisters continued to fly with the Belgian Air Force until 2007.
The Fouga Magister visible from the Christmas holidays at the Dutch Transport Museum in Nieuw-Vennep bears the striking red colours of the famous stunt and demonstration team of the Belgian Air Force: the Red Devils. This not only makes it extra fun for children to take place in the cockpit but also provides particularly photogenic photos of the young ‘pilots-in-spe’.
In addition to the new Fouga Magister jet fighter, which is on loan from the Belgian Royal Military Museum, the Dutch Transport Museum has a number of new attractions during the Christmas holidays. For children there are a ‘free bus’ and a bouncy castle; during free guided tours, everyone can take a look at the enormous Flight Simulator of the Dutch Aerospace Centre and, from 27 December, the very first Amsterdam Metro, the ‘Zilvermeeuw’ from 1977 can be seen at the museum in Nieuw-Vennep.
The Dutch Transport Museum in Nieuw-Vennep is open every weekend and during the Christmas holidays from 10:00 to 17:00 daily. Adults pay € 7.50 admission, children € 5.00 and a round trip with a historic bus costs € 2.50. Taking place in the cockpit of the Fouga Magister jet fighter is completely free for children, as is the guided tour, daily at 14:00.
