Russian military aircraft crashes during training flight near Moscow; pilot escapes unhurt

Share

A Russian military aircraft crashed during a routine training flight in the Moscow region on Thursday after suffering an apparent technical malfunction during take-off, according to the Russian Ministry of Defence.

The pilot successfully ejected and was rescued unharmed. The unarmed aircraft came down in an unpopulated area, with authorities reporting no casualties or damage on the ground.

While the Defence Ministry did not officially identify the aircraft type, Russian newspaper Kommersant, citing a source familiar with the investigation, reported that it was a Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter. Investigators have reportedly opened a criminal inquiry into possible violations of flight safety regulations.

The Ministry of Defence said the preliminary cause of the accident was a technical failure of the aircraft. If confirmed as a Su-57, the incident would involve Russia’s flagship stealth fighter, which entered service in 2020 and forms a key part of the country’s modernisation programme for its Aerospace Forces.
