JAS 39 C/D and JAS 39E get new functionality and changed delivery plans after FMV renegotiated the agreement with Saab. For the Swedish Armed Forces, this means that Gripen C/D continues to be developed and can operate after 2030 at the same time as the next generation fighter aircraft Gripen E is introduced.
– With the deteriorating global situation, we need to keep up and be at the technological forefront in order to face the threat of the future. This agreement means that we can continue to operate with both systems and continue to have a strong combat capability over time, says Air Force Chief Jonas Wikman.
To meet future threats, JAS 39E introduces, among other things, changes in the systems for telewarfare, radio and radar. The JAS 39E will be put into operation under FMV’s auspices in the fall of 2023, which will increase flight testing capacity and lay the foundation for the Armed Forces’ introduction of the system in the second half of the 2020s.
