The Swedish Armed Forces have officially inducted the JAS 39 Gripen E into operational service, marking a major milestone in Sweden’s defence modernisation. The first aircraft landed today at Skaraborg’s Air Flotilla F 7, where a ceremony gathered senior leaders from the Ministry of Defence, the Swedish Armed Forces, FMV (Defence Materiel Administration), and Saab.
“This marks an important milestone in the development of Swedish defence,” said Commander-in-Chief Michael Claesson. “Gripen E strengthens our national capability to meet future threats together with allies.”
The Gripen E is described as an entirely new aircraft system, offering greater range, payload, and survivability than previous C/D variants. It features advanced sensors, a new radar, and upgraded communications systems, designed to perform in contested environments where Sweden may not control the airspace.
According to Air Flotilla Commander Mattias Ottis, the aircraft “is a completely new system built for survivability, range, and collaboration — a result of Swedish innovation focused on operational effectiveness.”
The new model will operate alongside the Gripen C/D fleet for several years, allowing a gradual transition. The C/D will continue performing key missions while the E assumes new roles and capabilities.
“This is the beginning of a new chapter in Swedish aviation history,” said Ottis. “F 7 will lead the way in developing Sweden’s future air combat capability.”
With Gripen E now in service, Sweden takes a decisive step toward a more resilient, interoperable air defence, reinforcing its ability to respond to modern and emerging threats.
