European NATO countries abandon plan for Boeing E-7 Wedgetail AWACS

Share

European NATO countries, including the Netherlands, have scrapped their plan to jointly purchase six Boeing E-7 Wedgetail aircraft intended to replace the alliance’s aging fleet of Boeing E-3A Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) planes.

Reason for Cancellation

The decision follows the withdrawal of the United States from the AWACS replacement programme in July, which, according to the Dutch Ministry of Defence, removed the strategic and financial foundation of the collective purchase.

Future Plans and Alternatives

  • Urgent Need: NATO’s current fleet of 14 E-3A aircraft, based in Geilenkirchen, Germany, is reaching the end of its lifespan by 2035.

  • Commitment: The remaining six European NATO countries remain committed to having “other, quieter aircraft operational before 2035.”

  • Exploring Options: These nations are now actively exploring alternatives and seeking new partners.

  • Focus on Europe: Dutch State Secretary for Defence Gijs Tuinman emphasized the importance of “investing as much as possible in the European industry” following the U.S. withdrawal.

U.S. Withdrawal Context

The U.S. Department of Defense canceled its domestic E-7 Wedgetail programme in July, citing significant delays, cost increases, and survivability concerns. Instead, the U.S. plans to invest in space-based capabilities and additional E-2D Hawkeye aircraft.

Potential European Competitors

With the E-7 (based on the Boeing 737) off the table, the main European alternatives being considered to replace the E-3A (based on the older Boeing 707) include:

  • Saab’s GlobalEye: Built with Saab radar on a Bombardier business jet platform.6 Saab’s CEO noted “huge interest” from NATO, Germany, and Denmark.

  • Dassault Aviation’s Falcon 10X: A modified version proposed for the AWACS role, although its prospects were recently dampened by France’s decision to buy Saab’s GlobalEye in June.
