The Paraguayan Air Force has officially received four A-29 Super Tucano light attack and training aircraft from Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer, marking the country’s most significant defence acquisition in nearly four decades.
The delivery ceremony took place at Silvio Pettirossi Air Force Base near Asunción, attended by Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña, Vice President Pedro Alliana, Minister of National Defence Óscar González, and Air Force Commander General Júlio Fullaondo, alongside military and civil authorities.
“This is more than a fleet expansion — it is a leap forward in our operational capabilities,” said Gen. Fullaondo. “These aircraft will enhance our airspace surveillance, response readiness, and national defence. This is an investment in sovereignty and sustainable security.”
The delivery is part of a six-aircraft deal and represents a major modernisation effort for Paraguay’s air forces. The A-29 Super Tucano, selected by 22 air forces worldwide with over 290 units ordered, is praised for its versatility in light attack, reconnaissance, and advanced pilot training missions. Embraer recently celebrated 600,000 flight hours for the platform, underscoring its global operational success.
“The A-29 is a benchmark in its class, offering operational flexibility and combat-proven performance,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, CEO of Embraer Defence & Security. “We are confident it will serve the Paraguayan Air Force’s current and future mission needs.”
Designed for austere environments, the A-29 features advanced avionics, precision targeting systems, and the ability to operate from unpaved runways. It is also equipped for a range of roles, including close air support, air interdiction, border surveillance, and JTAC training, offering low lifecycle costs and high reliability.
The remaining two aircraft are expected to be delivered later this year.
